Mystery Booms Reported in Southwestern PA in 2018

For many years there have been reports of very loud mystery booms that have shaken homes and rattled the windows of structures. In the 1960’s we used to call these events “Sky Quakes”. These loud earth shakings have been going on for years around southwestern Pennsylvania and across the state and around the country as well.

In some cases, there have been explanations for these occurrences. Some of these loud sounds were determined to be associated with sonic booms, fireball meteors passing over an area, and local blasting, There have been various other theories proposed concerning these incidents including a meteorological event known as a “frost quake”. In some cases, these mystery shakings have not been explained.

I have been receiving reports of some recent loud booms from northern and central locations in Westmoreland County. During the week of January 21, 2018, I became aware of two such incidents. I am still obtaining more details on these cases. One witness who experienced one of these shakings in Westmoreland County told me that the sound “was like a train derailing and rattled the windows”.
